Description

The disease known as Cladosporium leaf blotch is caused by the fungus Cladosporium allii-cepae. It is a fungal pathogen that targets the foliage of Allium species, causing significant stress to the plant and disrupting its normal physiological processes during the growing season.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are various onion types, including bulb onion, green onion, and leek. While the disease can manifest at any growth stage, it is particularly destructive when plants are in their peak development phase, leading to potential yield losses.

Initial symptoms are characterized by small, pale green or white spots on the leaves. As the fungal infection progresses, these spots expand, darken into brown or olive-colored lesions, and often develop a velvet-like appearance due to the formation of fungal spores, especially under humid conditions.

The development and spread of Cladosporium allii-cepae are favored by high humidity, dew, and moderate temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C. Poor air circulation in dense plantings and the accumulation of infected plant debris provide an ideal environment for the fungus to multiply and spread.

The impact of this disease is significant as it causes premature wilting and death of the leaves, which directly reduces the plant's ability to store energy in the bulbs. This leads to stunted bulb growth, reduced harvest quality, and increased susceptibility to post-harvest storage rots.
