Cladosporium leaf blotch is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Cladosporium allii-porri. This plant disease is a common problem in onion and garlic crops, leading to significant yield losses if left unmanaged, particularly in regions with high humidity and moderate temperatures.
The primary hosts for this fungus include onion, leek, chives, and garlic. The disease typically affects the foliage, where it thrives by extracting nutrients from the plant tissue, eventually spreading to cover the entire leaf surface as the infection advances during the growing season.
Initial symptoms are characterized by the appearance of small, light-colored spots on the leaves. As the infection progresses, these spots elongate and turn gray to brown. Under high humidity, a velvety, olive-black fungal growth becomes visible on the lesions, eventually causing the leaves to wilt, yellow, and die back from the tips.
Development and dissemination of Cladosporium allii-porri are facilitated by wet weather, morning dew, and moderate temperatures. The fungus can survive in crop debris and the soil, making it a persistent threat that can recur in fields where host crops have been grown in previous seasons.
The economic impact of this disease is significant, as leaf death reduces the plant's capacity to store energy, resulting in smaller bulb size and reduced storage life. Effective management requires an integrated approach:
- Implementing a crop rotation cycle of at least 3–4 years away from Allium species.
- Sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of crop residues after harvest.
- Improving field drainage and plant spacing to enhance air circulation.
- Application of appropriate fungicides when weather conditions favor disease outbreak.
- Using certified healthy seed sets to prevent primary infection.
