Cladosporium leaf mold is a pervasive fungal disease caused by the pathogen Cladosporium cladosporioides. It is a common challenge for both amateur gardeners and professional farmers, particularly in humid environments. The fungus acts as a parasite that colonizes the leaves, stems, and fruits, often compromising the overall health and vitality of the host plants.

The disease affects a wide range of botanical families, with solanaceous crops like tomatoes and peppers being the most frequent victims. Furthermore, it can develop on ornamental plants and various fruit-bearing shrubs. Its ability to survive in diverse conditions makes it a persistent threat in both greenhouse cultivation and open-field farming systems.

Early symptoms include the formation of pale or yellow spots on the upper leaf surfaces, which eventually enlarge and turn brown. A distinctive feature is the dark, velvety fungal growth on the undersides of the leaves, consisting of dense conidiophores. As the infection progresses, leaves wither and drop, leading to significant physiological stress for the plant.

Environmental conditions are critical for the spread of this pathogen. High relative humidity (exceeding 80%) and temperatures between 18°C and 25°C are ideal for the germination and spread of spores. The fungus can survive for long periods in crop debris, soil, or even on greenhouse structures, awaiting favorable conditions to trigger a new infection cycle.

To effectively manage and prevent the disease, an integrated approach is essential:

  • Ensure proper ventilation to reduce humidity levels around the foliage.
  • Practice strict sanitation by removing and destroying all infected plant materials.
  • Avoid overhead irrigation to keep leaf surfaces dry.
  • Use resistant cultivars where possible to minimize susceptibility.
  • Apply appropriate fungicides preventively when weather conditions favor disease spread.
