Description

The fungus Cladosporium echinulatum is the causal agent of a specific leaf spot disease that primarily affects plants within the Dianthus genus. This fungal pathogen poses a significant threat to carnation crops, causing aesthetic damage and severe physiological stress that hinders normal plant growth and flowering.

The host range is primarily limited to carnations, which are susceptible during all stages of their development, especially in greenhouses. The disease disrupts the photosynthetic activity of the plant by causing necrotic spots on the foliage, which can eventually merge and lead to complete leaf senescence if left untreated.

Symptoms typically include small, whitish or pale-green spots that gradually develop into sunken, grayish-brown or purple-rimmed lesions. Under humid conditions, these spots become covered with a dense, olive-green to blackish fungal mat, which is composed of millions of spores ready to be dispersed by water splashes or air currents.

Environmental factors are critical for the development and spread of this disease. Excessive humidity, stagnant air, and prolonged moisture on leaf surfaces are the primary drivers of Cladosporium outbreaks. The fungus thrives in temperatures between 15°C and 22°C, often persisting in soil or on infected plant debris from previous seasons.

Effective management requires a multi-pronged approach that includes strict sanitation practices, such as removing infected leaves and debris immediately. Improving greenhouse airflow, lowering relative humidity, and avoiding overhead irrigation are essential cultural controls. Additionally, targeted applications of approved fungicides are recommended to prevent disease progression and protect new growth.
