The disease is caused by the fungus Cladosporium oxysporum, a member of the Deuteromycetes class. It often acts as a secondary pathogen invading weakened plant tissues, yet under favorable environmental conditions, it demonstrates significant virulence, leading to necrotic spots and rot across various plant organs.

This pathogen has a wide host range, affecting various vegetable, fruit, and industrial crops. Common hosts include tomatoes, cucumbers, legumes, and citrus varieties. It can also persist as a saprophyte on crop residues, allowing it to survive in the soil or field environment between growing seasons.

Symptoms typically begin as small chlorotic spots, which eventually transition into brown or olive-colored lesions. During periods of high humidity, a velvety fungal growth appears on the surface of these spots, consisting of conidiophores and conidia. These lesions cause leaf necrosis, leading to early defoliation and a reduction in photosynthetic capacity.

The development and spread of Cladosporium oxysporum are favored by high relative humidity (above 85%) and moderate temperatures. Fungal spores are easily disseminated by air currents, splashing rain, or handling of agricultural equipment. Persistent leaf wetness is a critical requirement for spore germination and infection establishment.
