Description
The disease is caused by the fungus Cladosporium sphaerospermum, a cosmopolitan hyphomycete. This pathogen is known for its ability to cause leaf mold, manifesting as brownish or olive-colored spots on various plant organs. The fungus is highly adaptive and spreads rapidly through airborne conidia, colonizing host tissues in diverse environmental conditions.
The pathogen affects a broad spectrum of host plants, including vegetable crops, ornamental plants, and fruit species. Tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and various indoor plants are particularly susceptible to Cladosporium sphaerospermum. The fungus can infect tissues throughout the entire growing season, from seedling stage to fruit maturation, significantly impacting both plant vigor and yield quality.
Symptoms typically appear as circular or angular spots on the foliage, which eventually turn brown or dark olive. Under humid conditions, a velvety fungal growth becomes visible on the underside of the leaves. As the disease progresses, these spots coalesce, causing leaves to yellow, wither, and eventually fall off, leading to significant defoliation of the plant.

It is crucial to manage humidity through proper ventilation and irrigation practices that minimize leaf wetness. In cases of severe infection, the application of chemical or biological fungicides, compliant with local regulations, is necessary to mitigate the spread of the pathogen.
