Description
The disease is caused by the fungus Cladosporium variabile, which is recognized as a significant foliar pathogen. It belongs to the group of fungi that cause characteristic spotting on leaves, primarily affecting species within the Amaranthaceae family, most notably spinach crops.
The primary host for this fungus is common spinach. Infection leads to the deterioration of leaf tissues, significantly lowering the marketability and quality of the yield. When plants are attacked in the field or greenhouse, the leaves develop necrosis that prevents them from being processed or sold.
Symptoms typically begin as small, pale green or yellow spots that eventually expand and turn light brown or grey. A distinct velvety, dark olive-colored mold often appears on the underside of the leaves. This mold represents the mass of spores produced by the fungus for further propagation.
The spread of Cladosporium variabile is heavily dependent on moisture and moderate temperatures. Spores are easily disseminated via wind, splashing water from irrigation, or rain. High humidity levels combined with poor airflow in dense plantings create an environment where the fungus can rapidly colonize healthy plant tissues.
Management strategies focus on preventive measures. Farmers should prioritize crop rotation, select resistant cultivars, and maintain proper plant spacing to ensure air circulation.
