Clasterosporium, typically manifested as shot-hole disease, is a significant fungal infection caused by the pathogen Clasterosporium carpophilum. This disease primarily affects stone fruit species, causing extensive damage to leaves, buds, twigs, and fruit, which negatively impacts tree vitality and commercial yields.
The host range includes common stone fruit trees such as peaches, nectarines, apricots, cherries, and plums. The fungus is highly adapted to these species and can persist in various plant parts, making it a persistent challenge in both commercial orchards and backyard environments if left unmanaged.
Symptoms are distinct and easily recognizable: small, circular reddish-brown spots appear on the leaves. As the infected tissue dies, it falls out, leaving characteristic holes that give the disease its name. On stems, the infection causes sunken lesions that may ooze sap, while fruit surfaces develop crusty, necrotic spots that ruin the aesthetic and commercial quality of the harvest.
The environmental requirements for the spread of Clasterosporium include cool, wet conditions, particularly during early spring. Rain and wind are primary vectors for spore dispersal, moving the fungus from overwintering sites like cankers and dormant buds to new, susceptible growth during the critical early stages of the growing season.
Control strategies focus on a combination of cultural and chemical practices to minimize disease pressure.
