Claussenomyces infection is a fungal disease affecting various tree species, caused by the Claussenomyces genus of fungi. These organisms primarily behave as saprotrophs but can exhibit opportunistic parasitic traits, taking advantage of vulnerable trees that have been compromised by environmental stress or physical injuries.
The pathogen is characterized by the production of small, often gelatinous ascomata on the bark surface. These structures serve as the primary source of inoculum. The fungi spread by infiltrating the bark and cambium layers, especially where the natural protective barrier of the tree has been breached by insects, wind damage, or frost cracks.
Symptoms of this condition include discoloration of the bark, the emergence of fungal structures following rainfall, and the formation of localized necrotic patches. Over time, these infected areas may develop longitudinal cracks or lesions, which serve as entry points for other decay-causing organisms, further accelerating the degradation of the wood.
The development of the fungus is heavily dependent on moisture and humidity. It flourishes in cool, damp environments where surface moisture remains on the bark for extended periods. The dissemination of spores is primarily driven by wind and rain, allowing the disease to move easily between trees in dense stands or plantations.
