While often considered a saprotrophic organism that plays a role in the natural decomposition of organic matter, its presence on living or standing trees serves as a critical diagnostic marker for underlying plant stress or pre-existing decay.
The pathogen produces small, characteristic gelatinous to waxy apothecia on the surface of the bark. These reproductive structures facilitate the release of spores into the surrounding environment. Because the fungus thrives on damp, shaded substrates, it is most commonly found in densely planted forest areas or poorly ventilated garden environments where moisture accumulates on the bark.
The primary hosts of this fungus include species within the Picea (spruce) genus. It usually targets branches and main trunks that are suffering from environmental stress, such as drought, frost damage, or previous infestations by wood-boring insects.
