Clavariaceae rot refers to fungal infections caused by members of the Clavariaceae family, often associated with the group of fungi known as snow mold (typically Typhula species). These pathogens are complex soil-borne fungi that survive in the environment as sclerotia, waiting for the precise climatic conditions to initiate infection.
The primary hosts for this disease include winter cereals such as wheat, rye, and barley. Additionally, these fungi can affect various turf grasses and forage crops. Because the infection occurs during the winter dormancy period, it is often referred to as a low-temperature disease that targets plants when they are most vulnerable.
Visual symptoms usually appear immediately after the snow melts in early spring. Infected leaves develop a thick, cottony mycelial mat that is white or grayish in color. As the disease progresses, the plant tissues turn necrotic and soft. The presence of tiny, dark-colored sclerotia on the leaves or the crown of the plant is a definitive diagnostic feature of the infection.
The development of the disease is strictly dependent on environmental factors. The optimal conditions are extended periods of snow cover combined with unfrozen, moist soil. This creates a microclimate under the snow that allows the fungus to remain metabolically active and spread rapidly across the crop canopy.
The economic impact of this rot is significant, as it can cause widespread crop thinning or complete destruction of stands, necessitating costly reseeding. Effective management strategies include implementing appropriate crop rotation, ensuring the use of certified disease-free seeds, managing nitrogen fertilizer application to prevent excessive succulent growth before winter, and utilizing preventative fungicidal seed treatments.
