Clavicorona is a genus of fungi that can act as a pathogen in agricultural and forestry settings, primarily targeting woody plants. While these fungi are often found on decaying wood, under certain conditions, they can infest weakened fruit trees and shrubs, leading to significant structural damage and long-term decline in plant health.

The disease is caused by fungal pathogens that belong to the white rot group. These fungi decompose the lignin and cellulose within the wood, which leads to structural instability. As a facultative parasite, the fungus exploits damaged tissue to establish itself, eventually spreading to healthy parts of the plant and hindering the transportation of nutrients and water.

Various species of orchard trees and ornamental shrubs are susceptible to this infection, especially if they have suffered from environmental stress, pest attacks, or improper pruning. The pathogen enters the host plant primarily through wounds, broken branches, or unprotected cuts, where moisture allows for rapid germination of spores.

Symptoms of infestation are quite distinct and include the growth of branching, coral-like fungal structures on the bark. As the disease progresses, the internal wood tissue becomes soft and spongy, often appearing bleached or white. This leads to the characteristic shedding of bark and eventual structural failure of branches or the trunk itself, which is a major concern for tree longevity.

Effective protection measures focus on sanitation and preventative care. All infected woody parts must be surgically removed and disposed of away from the planting site to prevent spore spread.
