Clavispora lusitaniae is a species of yeast-like ascomycete fungus recognized in agronomy as an opportunistic plant pathogen. While it naturally exists as a saprophyte, it can transition to a parasitic lifestyle under specific conditions, attacking the structural tissues of various agricultural crops. Its ability to thrive in diverse environments makes it a persistent challenge for fruit and vegetable producers.

The primary pathology induced by this fungus is associated with soft rot. It frequently affects fruit-bearing plants, vineyards, and stored produce. The fungus utilizes its enzyme system to break down plant cell walls, allowing it to penetrate through even minor physical injuries or stomatal openings. Once inside, it rapidly degrades the plant material, causing significant structural damage.

Symptoms of the infection typically appear as water-soaked spots on the surface of fruits or stems. As the infection progresses, these areas darken and become soft to the touch. Under conditions of high ambient humidity, the lesion may develop a creamy or off-white yeast-like bloom, which serves as a cluster of spores facilitating the further spread of the pathogen throughout the crop.

Development and spread are highly dependent on the microclimate. Optimal growth occurs in temperatures ranging from +20°C to +28°C combined with high relative humidity. Transmission often occurs via water splashing, contaminated tools, or physical contact between infected and healthy harvest units. Because of these characteristics, the pathogen can spread rapidly in cramped storage environments.

The economic impact is primarily seen in substantial post-harvest losses. Prevention and protection strategies are essential for maintaining crop quality and include:

  • Strict sanitation protocols in storage facilities and processing areas.
  • Careful handling of produce during harvest to prevent mechanical wounds.
  • Implementing controlled atmosphere storage to inhibit fungal enzymatic activity.
  • Regular inspection and immediate removal of damaged or symptomatic plant material.
  • Application of specialized post-harvest fungicides where permitted to extend shelf life.
