Clavulina is a genus of basidiomycete fungi that, while primarily saprotrophic, can act as a pathogen affecting the root systems and wood of various plants. In an agronomic and forestry context, it is recognized for its role in causing root decay and structural weakness in vulnerable trees, particularly in environments with high soil moisture.
The disease is classified as a fungal infection, specifically targeting the subterranean and basal parts of the host. The pathogen colonizes the tissues by invading the root system through existing wounds or decaying organic matter nearby. Once established, the mycelium spreads into the vascular tissue, disrupting the host's ability to transport water and essential nutrients effectively.
Host plants typically include broadleaf trees and woody ornamental species, such as oak and beech. The development of the fungus is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, with excessive humidity and poor soil aeration being primary drivers for its spread. It is a common occurrence in forest ecosystems and nurseries where sanitary conditions are not adequately maintained.
The primary clinical signs of Clavulina infection include the emergence of characteristic coral-shaped, white or cream-colored fruiting bodies near the base of the tree or on the soil surface. Foliar symptoms often manifest as chlorosis, stunted growth, and canopy dieback. As the disease progresses, the root bark and xylem begin to deteriorate, leading to tree instability.
Management and prevention strategies focus on promoting overall plant vigor and maintaining a clean environment. Key practices include:

- Improving site drainage to reduce the humidity levels that favor fungal growth.
