While primarily identified as a decomposer, its interaction with live plant roots classifies it as a potential opportunistic pathogen that requires careful management in agricultural and forestry contexts.

The causative agent is a basidiomycete fungus that colonizes the rhizosphere. It targets tree and shrub roots, slowly invading the vascular tissue. By secreting enzymes that break down organic matter, the mycelium can compromise the host plant's ability to absorb water and essential minerals, leading to systemic stress throughout the plant.

Symptoms of an infection often manifest as stunted growth, thinning of the canopy, and chlorosis in leaves or needles.
