Description
Climacocystis is a genus of bracket fungi known for causing brown rot in various tree species. This type of decay significantly compromises the structural integrity of the wood, leading to the breakdown of cellulose and lignin, which eventually results in the tree becoming brittle and susceptible to windthrow.
The primary pathogen within this genus is Climacocystis borealis. As a parasitic organism, it gains entry into the host tree through wounds, logging scars, or frost cracks in the bark. Once established, the fungus colonizes the heartwood, spreading through the interior and weakening the tree from within.
The disease primarily affects coniferous trees, particularly spruce, although it can be found on fir or pine in certain environments. The pathogen thrives in humid, cool conditions, which favor the production of basidiospores that travel long distances to colonize new vulnerable trees.
Symptoms of an active infection include the appearance of white, fleshy, and often overlapping fruit bodies on the bark of the trunk. Internally, the infected wood exhibits advanced signs of decay: it becomes dark brown, crumbly, and breaks into rectangular chunks, indicating that the cellulose has been completely decomposed.
Effective management and prevention focus on maintaining forest health through rigorous sanitary practices. This includes the removal of infected trees, minimizing wounding during forestry operations, and conducting regular inspections to identify fungal activity before it spreads to neighboring healthy trees.
