The causative agent is the fungal mycelium that proliferates in humus-rich forest soils. Its primary lifestyle is saprotrophic, meaning it decomposes organic matter. However, in dense populations, it competes for space and nutrients within the rhizosphere, potentially hindering the establishment of beneficial mycorrhizal associations.
Targeted plants include seedlings and young nursery stock, particularly those grown in soils with high organic content. While not classified as a direct plant parasite, its activity can create an environment that suppresses the vital root functions of juvenile plants, leading to stunted growth and reduced vigor.
