In agricultural and forestry contexts, it acts as a wood-decay fungus that can occasionally transition from a saprotrophic lifestyle to an opportunistic pathogen. While not a primary parasite of agricultural crops, it poses a threat to trees in orchards, nurseries, and public parklands by attacking weakened tissue.
The causative agent develops through a network of mycelium that colonizes organic matter and decaying wood. It primarily affects tree species that are physiologically stressed or growing in poorly drained soils. The pathogen utilizes the organic debris around the root zone, eventually infiltrating the root system if the host's natural defenses are compromised by abiotic factors.
Symptoms of infestation often manifest as stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and premature defoliation. In more severe cases, the base of the trunk may show signs of decay or fungal fruiting bodies, indicating a well-established colony in the root system. High humidity, mild temperatures, and the accumulation of mulch or forest litter create an ideal environment for spore germination. The fungus spreads through the movement of airborne spores and direct vegetative expansion of the mycelium through the soil.
