Clitocybe truncicola is a mushroom species from the Tricholomataceae family that functions as a saprotrophic organism but acts as a latent pathogen for various tree species. In horticultural settings, it is often associated with the breakdown of woody tissues in stressed or damaged trees.

The causative agent is the fungus's mycelium, which invades the tree through bark fissures, pruning wounds, or frost damage. It typically causes white rot, a form of fungal decay that decomposes the tree's structural components, specifically lignin and cellulose, leading to a loss of mechanical integrity.

This fungus primarily affects broadleaf trees and various fruit-bearing orchard species. It thrives in environments with poor air circulation, high humidity, and where old wood debris is left to accumulate at the base of the trees, providing a constant source of inoculation.

Symptoms include the appearance of distinct fungal fruiting bodies on the trunk, typically near the soil level or on branch stubs. Internally, the wood becomes discolored and soft, eventually leading to a noticeable decline in the tree's vigor, crown thinning, and in severe cases, structural failure.

Prevention is the most effective defense against this wood-rotting fungus.
