Clitocybe vitecina is a significant wood-decay fungus that acts as a pathogen in forest ecosystems, primarily responsible for causing white root rot in various tree species. This fungus belongs to the saprotrophic group that can transition to a parasitic lifestyle, effectively compromising the structural and physiological health of host trees.

The fungus typically infects conifers and some broad-leaved trees, targeting the root system and the lower part of the trunk. It enters the host through wounds, broken roots, or via root contact with already infected trees. Once established, it breaks down the complex organic compounds in the wood, leading to substantial degradation.

Key symptoms include general chlorosis of the foliage, crown thinning, and the presence of fungal fruiting bodies appearing at the base of the stem during moist conditions. Internally, the wood loses its density and integrity, which leads to the collapse of the tree's water-conducting tissues and increases susceptibility to physical damage.
