Clitopilus abortivus, commonly known as the Aborted Entoloma, is a species of fungus in the Entolomataceae family. In agricultural and forest pathology, it is primarily recognized for its unique biological interaction with the Armillaria species, commonly known as honey mushrooms. It significantly alters the development of these mushrooms, leading to the formation of distorted, aborted specimens.

The biological nature of this interaction is characterized as an antagonism between the two fungi. While Clitopilus abortivus itself is a saprotrophic fungus, it colonizes the mycelium of Armillaria, which are serious pathogens responsible for root rot in various woody plants. By inhibiting the normal development of the honey mushroom, it plays a complex role in the ecosystem of the forest floor.

The primary symptom of this interaction is the presence of white, bulbous, and fleshy masses that replace the typical caps and stems of mushrooms. These structures are hard, deformed, and lack the characteristic gills of a typical agaric mushroom. Observing these formations in a garden or orchard often indicates a heavy underlying infestation of honey mushrooms, which may pose a risk to nearby trees.

Development conditions for Clitopilus abortivus require moist soil environments and the presence of decaying organic matter, specifically wood infected with Armillaria. The species is most active during periods of high precipitation and moderate temperatures in late summer and autumn. Its spread is facilitated by airborne spores that colonize new woody debris.

Measures for prevention and control are focused on managing the Armillaria source of the infection rather than eliminating the Aborted Entoloma itself. Key strategies include:

  • Removing dead wood, old stumps, and root systems from the soil.
  • Ensuring proper soil drainage to limit the moist conditions favorable for fungi.
  • Maintaining the overall vigor of trees to make them less susceptible to root rot.
