Clonostachys (specifically the species Clonostachys rosea, formerly Gliocladium roseum) is a genus of fungi that can function as both a beneficial antagonist and a destructive plant pathogen. In a pathogenic context, it is responsible for causing significant rot and mold issues in a variety of horticultural and agricultural crops worldwide.
This pathogen targets a wide array of host plants, including tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, strawberries, and various ornamental greenhouse plants. It is particularly adept at attacking reproductive structures like fruits and flowers, though it can also cause root rot and stem lesions under favorable environmental conditions.
The primary symptom of a Clonostachys infection is the development of a fluffy, light pink or whitish mold on the surface of plant tissues. This growth is accompanied by tissue softening, watery rot, and browning, which leads to rapid decay of the affected area and can eventually destroy entire harvests if left unmanaged.
Development and spread are primarily driven by high relative humidity (above 85%) and moderate temperatures. The fungus produces vast quantities of conidia that are easily dispersed via air currents, splashing water from irrigation, contaminated farming equipment, and physical contact between plants in dense canopy conditions.
Control measures are centered on minimizing moisture accumulation and maintaining plant hygiene. Essential practices include implementing strict crop rotation, ensuring proper airflow in greenhouses, and removing infected plant debris immediately. Chemical controls, alongside biological fungicides, are recommended for suppressing outbreaks when environmental conditions become conducive to fungal growth.
