Clypeosphaeria is a genus of ascomycetous fungi that typically function as saprotrophs or weak pathogens affecting various woody plants and shrubs. These fungi are taxonomically placed within the order Xylariales and are characterized by the production of distinctive stromatic structures that erupt through the bark surface of the host plant, serving as the primary site for spore dispersal.

This pathogen primarily targets stressed, damaged, or aging woody tissues. It is commonly found on fruit trees and forest species that have suffered from winter injury, mechanical damage, or physiological stress. By colonizing these weakened areas, the fungus utilizes the available nutrients to complete its life cycle while potentially inhibiting the healing processes of the host.

Symptoms are identified by the presence of small, dark, often shiny, and slightly raised stromatic pustules on the bark of stems and branches. As the fungus matures, the surrounding epidermal layer may split or crack, and the affected tissue often shows signs of necrosis.
