Description

The Clypeosphaeriaceae family consists of ascomycetous fungi within the Xylariales order, known to cause various necrotic lesions and leaf spots in a broad range of plant hosts. A defining characteristic of this group is the development of a clypeus, a hardened fungal structure that shields the perithecia embedded within the plant's epidermis or substrate.

These pathogens predominantly infect woody plants, shrubs, and certain perennial crops. By colonizing leaves, shoots, and sometimes fruits, the fungus disrupts plant vitality. The damage typically manifests as irregular necrotic spots, which can lead to significant defoliation and reduced photosynthesis, ultimately compromising the vigor and productivity of the affected plant.

Symptoms often begin as small, discolored spots that gradually expand, becoming necrotic with darker margins. As the infection progresses, the diagnostic feature of the disease becomes visible: small, black, dot-like fruiting bodies (ascomata) that appear on the surface of the lesions. Under moist conditions, the spread of the fungus is characterized by visible spore production around these infected zones.

The development and dissemination of Clypeosphaeriaceae are highly moisture-dependent. Prolonged wet weather, high humidity, and moderate temperatures facilitate the germination of spores and their penetration into plant tissues. The primary inoculum source is typically overwintering mycelium or fruiting bodies on fallen leaves or infected plant debris, which release spores at the onset of the growing season.

Effective disease management requires an integrated approach. The most critical preventive measure is the sanitation of the orchard or field, which includes the removal and destruction of infected litter. Furthermore, regular pruning is essential to improve airflow, reducing the micro-humidity that the fungus thrives in. When necessary, chemical control using targeted fungicides during high-risk periods remains an effective tool for preventing significant crop loss.
