Coccinonectria is a genus of fungi belonging to the Ascomycota division, known for causing destructive necrotic diseases in woody plants. In agronomy, these fungi are identified as significant pathogens that attack the bark and vascular system of trees. This disease represents a severe threat to the structural integrity and longevity of orchards.

The primary hosts for Coccinonectria are stone fruit trees, including cherries, plums, and apricots. The pathogen typically enters the tree through physical wounds, pruning cuts, or frost-damaged areas on the bark. Once inside, the fungus colonizes the cambium and xylem tissues, effectively disrupting the nutrient and water supply to the branches.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as darkened, sunken lesions on the bark, accompanied by cracking or localized necrosis. In advanced stages, small, bright red or orange fruiting bodies (perithecia) emerge from the infected bark surfaces. Eventually, affected branches show signs of chlorosis, leaf wilting, and dieback, starting from the tips and progressing toward the main stem.

The development of the disease is heavily favored by cool, wet weather and high humidity. Spores are primarily disseminated by wind and splashing rainwater, making rainy spring seasons critical periods for infection. The fungus persists in the tree as dormant mycelium or spores within the necrotic bark, serving as a persistent reservoir for subsequent infections each year.

The impact of Coccinonectria is characterized by significant reduction in yield, weakened tree vigor, and eventual mortality of infected branches or the entire tree. Because the infection is internal, it can be difficult to detect in the early stages, often leading to rapid spread throughout the orchard if monitoring is not prioritized. Economic losses can be severe due to premature tree death.

  • Strict sanitation protocols involving the removal and destruction of infected wood.
  • Applying wound-healing paints or copper-based treatments immediately after pruning.
