Coccinonectria rusci is a specific fungal pathogen belonging to the Ascomycota division, known for causing necrotic lesions on the cladodes of Ruscus species. As a specialized parasite, it primarily targets plants that are either weakened by environmental stress or have physical wounds, leading to significant physiological damage to the host.
The host range is predominantly limited to the genus Ruscus, commonly known as butcher's broom. These plants are often grown as decorative foliage in gardens and interior landscapes. The infection can spread rapidly in controlled environments such as greenhouses, where high humidity levels and limited air circulation facilitate the life cycle of the pathogen.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the development of dark, necrotic spots on the leaf-like cladodes. A key diagnostic feature is the emergence of small, reddish-orange perithecia (fruiting bodies) clustered on the surface of the infected tissue. These structures are responsible for the production and dispersal of spores, which act as the primary source of new infections.
Environmental conditions are the primary drivers of disease outbreaks. High relative humidity and prolonged leaf wetness are essential for spore germination and colonization. The infection often gains entry through wounds caused by pruning, insect feeding, or environmental abrasions, making damaged plants highly susceptible to invasion during periods of moisture excess.
The impact of this disease on host plants is marked by reduced photosynthetic capacity, premature shedding of cladodes, and overall decline in plant vigor. If left unmanaged, the infection can become systemic within a shrub, leading to branch dieback and significantly compromising the aesthetic and economic value of the cultivated crop.
