Coccoideaceae is a family of fungi belonging to the order Pleosporales that includes several pathogens causing various plant diseases. These organisms are typically associated with leaf spot symptoms, where they colonize the epidermis and sub-epidermal layers of the host plant, deriving nutrition from living cells and eventually causing tissue death.

The host range is diverse, often affecting trees, shrubs, and ornamental plants. Symptoms primarily manifest as small, necrotic lesions on the leaf surface. These spots may be surrounded by yellow halos as the pathogen secretes toxins or enzymes during the infection process. Under microscopic analysis, the presence of specific fungal fruiting structures within these lesions is the primary diagnostic marker.

Environmental conditions such as high humidity, frequent rain, and moderate temperatures are the most critical factors for the rapid spread of the disease. The conidia are disseminated primarily by wind and splashing water, which leads to secondary cycles of infection throughout the growing season if weather conditions remain favourable for the pathogen.

The economic impact of Coccoideaceae infections is largely due to premature defoliation, which severely reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant. Long-term impacts include decreased growth vigor, reduced flower and fruit production, and an overall susceptibility to secondary pests and environmental stressors such as drought or frost.

  • Strict sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of infected leaf litter to eliminate overwintering inoculum.
  • Improving air circulation within the canopy by proper pruning and spacing.
