Coccomyces clusiae is a fungal pathogen responsible for leaf spot disease in various species of the Clusia genus. As a parasitic fungus, it targets the plant's foliage, compromising the structural integrity of the leaves and disrupting vital physiological processes such as photosynthesis.
The host plants are primarily Clusia species grown in tropical conditions, greenhouses, or as indoor ornamentals. The pathogen typically enters the leaf tissue through stomata or mechanical wounds, establishing a mycelial network that eventually breaks through the epidermis to produce spores.
Clinical symptoms include the development of necrotic spots on the leaf blades. These lesions are initially small and chlorotic, eventually turning brown or greyish-brown as the tissue dies. In advanced stages, large portions of the leaf tissue may become necrotic, leading to premature leaf abscission and significant defoliation.
The environmental factors driving the disease spread are high relative humidity and poor air circulation. Warm temperatures, coupled with stagnant air around the canopy, provide the perfect environment for the germination of fungal spores, especially when moisture persists on the leaf surfaces for extended periods.
