Cocconia is a genus of ascomycete fungi responsible for various leaf spot diseases on woody plants, shrubs, and ornamental trees. These fungi act as obligate or facultative parasites, infiltrating the plant's leaf tissue to draw nutrients and produce reproductive structures, which significantly weakens the host plant over time.
The primary hosts of Cocconia include various species of evergreen plants, notably those within the Moraceae and other tropical families. These pathogens are frequently encountered in nurseries and ornamental gardens, where the proximity of hosts and specific environmental conditions facilitate the transmission and establishment of the fungal colonies.
The clinical symptoms of a Cocconia infection appear as small, often circular, necrotic spots on the leaves. As the disease progresses, these lesions typically display small, dark, raised fruiting bodies known as apothecia, which emerge through the leaf epidermis. Severe infections result in the coalescing of these spots, leading to premature leaf senescence and abscission.
The development of the disease is strictly dependent on high humidity levels and moisture availability. Water splash from overhead irrigation or rain plays a critical role in the dissemination of fungal spores to healthy foliage. Warm temperatures further accelerate the incubation period, allowing the fungus to complete its life cycle and spread throughout the canopy quickly.
Managing Cocconia requires an integrated approach to minimize disease pressure in agricultural and landscape settings. Effective preventive measures include:
- Sanitation, such as the removal and destruction of fallen debris.
- Improving canopy airflow to reduce humidity levels around leaves.
- Avoiding overhead irrigation to keep foliage dry.
- Applying preventative fungicidal sprays containing copper or systemic active ingredients during periods of high disease risk.
