Coccotrema is a genus of lichens often mistaken for a plant disease due to its presence on the stems and branches of trees. It is a symbiotic organism comprised of an ascomycete fungus and an alga. In agricultural practice, it is crucial to recognize that Coccotrema is an epiphyte and not a parasitic plant pathogen that causes infection or tissue decay.

The organism does not derive nutrition from the plant host, nor does it penetrate the cambium or vascular tissues to extract sap. Instead, it relies on the bark surface purely for physical anchorage. Consequently, it does not cause necrotic lesions, rots, or any systemic health decline in the trees it colonizes.

Symptoms of its presence include the formation of crustose thalli directly on the bark. These formations can vary in appearance, usually presenting as grey, whitish, or yellowish patches. A key diagnostic feature is the integrity of the underlying bark; if the wood is healthy and shows no signs of fungal or bacterial rot, the growth is likely a harmless lichen.

The development of Coccotrema is strictly driven by high atmospheric humidity and the absence of air pollutants. These lichens are highly sensitive to sulfur dioxide and other airborne toxins. Their presence is generally considered a positive bioindicator, suggesting that the local environment is free from significant industrial pollution and maintains high air quality.

As Coccotrema does not pose a threat to plant productivity, specific control measures are typically unnecessary. However, if visual management is desired, standard horticultural practices can be applied:

  • Regular removal of loose, dead bark during maintenance pruning.
  • Proper thinning of tree canopies to improve air circulation and reduce excessive surface moisture.
  • Maintaining tree vigor through balanced nutrition and watering to ensure rapid bark renewal.
