Codinaea is a genus of hyphomycete fungi responsible for various leaf spot diseases in plants. As a plant pathogen, it primarily infects the foliage, where it extracts nutrients from the plant tissue, leading to localized necrosis and compromising the photosynthetic capacity of the host.
This pathogen impacts a variety of ornamental plants, shrubs, and specific agricultural species. It is opportunistic, often thriving in environments where the plant's natural defenses are lowered or where the local climate provides an ideal incubation period for fungal spores to colonize the leaf surface.
Symptoms often begin as small, discolored spots that gradually expand. Depending on the specific host and environmental conditions, these spots may become necrotic, eventually turning dark brown or gray. In many cases, a chlorotic halo may surround the lesion, indicating the plant's unsuccessful attempt to contain the fungal infection.

Unlike many other diseases, Codinaea flourishes when moisture is trapped on the leaf surface for extended periods, allowing the fungus to penetrate the epidermis successfully.
The damage caused by this fungus includes premature leaf drop, reduced plant vigor, and potential crop yield loss if the infestation is severe. Protection strategies should focus on environmental management:
