Description

Coelomomycetosis is a fungal infection caused by members of the Coelomomycetaceae family. These fungi are specialized entomopathogens that primarily infect aquatic insect larvae. Unlike common plant pathogens, these fungi are valued for their role in the natural regulation of insect populations in aquatic ecosystems.

The causative agent acts as an obligate parasite with a complex life cycle. In many species, the infection process requires alternating between an insect host and an intermediate host, such as copepods. Once the spores penetrate the insect's cuticle, the fungal mycelium grows within the body cavity, effectively consuming the host's tissues and nutrients.

Symptoms of the disease in larvae include a distinct change in body color to white or creamy, caused by the proliferation of fungal sporangia beneath the integument. As the infection progresses, the larva becomes lethargic and stops feeding. The ultimate sign of the infection is the death of the host, followed by the release of resting spores into the water.

Environmental factors such as water temperature, nutrient levels, and the presence of intermediate hosts significantly influence the spread of the disease. High population densities of the host larvae in stable water bodies often trigger outbreaks, allowing the fungus to spread rapidly through the aquatic environment.
