Coenogoniaceae is a family of lichens that often colonize the bark of trees and shrubs. While they are classified as epiphytes rather than direct plant pathogens, their presence is considered an indicator of poor orchard maintenance, excessive humidity, and general tree stress.

The organism consists of a symbiotic relationship between fungi and algae. Although they do not extract nutrients directly from the tree, the dense growth of these lichens creates a barrier that inhibits gas exchange, reduces the elasticity of the bark, and blocks sunlight, which negatively affects the tree's physiological health.

These lichens frequently affect older fruit trees, including apples, pears, and various stone fruits, especially in humid regions with poor airflow. In nurseries or neglected orchards, the presence of Coenogoniaceae can quickly become widespread across stems and major branches, signaling a need for intervention.

The spread of Coenogoniaceae is facilitated by high atmospheric humidity, lack of pruning, and dense foliage that prevents the bark from drying out after rainfall. Environments with low competition and stable moisture levels allow these lichens to thrive, eventually creating habitats for various pests and fungal spores.

Control measures primarily focus on physical removal and environmental management. Key strategies for farmers include:

  • Mechanical removal of lichens using soft wire brushes or scrapers during the dormant season.
  • Applying lime washes to tree trunks to disinfect the surface.
  • Pruning branches to ensure better air circulation and light penetration within the canopy.
  • Systemic fungicide treatments containing copper to manage associated fungal threats.
