Eupatorium rust is caused by the fungus Coleosporium eupatorii, an obligate parasite that specifically targets members of the Eupatorium genus. This pathogen is a basidiomycete fungus known for forming distinctive pustules on host tissues. Its life cycle involves the production of spores that facilitate rapid transmission under suitable environmental conditions.

The disease primarily affects ornamental Eupatorium species commonly found in perennial flower beds. Infection typically starts on the foliage, impacting the leaves and sometimes petioles. If left unmanaged, the fungal growth can severely compromise the plant's overall health and vigor throughout the growing season.

The primary symptom is the appearance of small, chlorotic spots on the upper leaf surface. As the infection progresses, bright orange or yellow pustules (aecia) develop on the undersides of the leaves. Severe infestations lead to premature yellowing of the foliage, leaf curling, and eventual defoliation, which negatively impacts the plant's aesthetic value.

The development of Coleosporium eupatorii is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly high relative humidity and moderate temperatures. Moisture on the leaf surface is essential for spore germination. The fungus spreads easily via wind currents or water splashes from overhead irrigation, and it can survive the winter in plant debris.

Effective control strategies include sanitation practices such as removing and destroying infected plant material at the end of the season to reduce the inoculum level. Providing adequate spacing between plants improves air circulation, which discourages fungal growth. If necessary, systemic fungicides should be applied preventively to protect new growth during peak humidity periods.
