Description

Pathogen and disease type. Phellodendron rust is caused by the fungus Coleosporium phellodendri, which is a member of the Pucciniaceae family. It is a specialized fungal parasite that exclusively targets plants within the Phellodendron genus. This disease belongs to the rust group, characterized by the formation of distinctive spore-producing structures on the foliage of the host tree.

Susceptible plants. The primary host for this pathogen is the Amur cork tree (Phellodendron amurense). It is particularly common in nurseries, botanical gardens, and ornamental plantations. While the host remains alive, the infection severely impairs its physiological functions and reduces its overall vigor throughout the growing season.

Symptoms and signs of infection. The most noticeable symptom is the appearance of bright orange or yellow pustules (aecia) on the underside of the leaves. As the infection progresses, yellow or necrotic spots manifest on the upper side of the leaf surface. In cases of severe infestation, affected leaves may become chlorotic, wither, and abscise prematurely, leading to early defoliation of the tree.

Developmental conditions and impact. The fungus thrives in environments with high humidity, frequent rain, and moderate temperatures, which are essential for spore germination and spread. The economic and aesthetic impact is significant; heavy defoliation stresses the tree, inhibits photosynthesis, and makes the plant susceptible to environmental stressors and other secondary pathogens.

Control and prevention measures. Effective management depends on integrated plant protection practices:

  • Sanitation is crucial: collect and destroy all fallen leaves during autumn to remove the overwintering inoculum.
  • Implement proper pruning to ensure canopy ventilation, which reduces local humidity.
  • Apply fungicide treatments when initial signs of rust are detected to prevent widespread infection.
  • Promote plant vigor through balanced nutrition to help the trees withstand the parasitic load of the fungus.
