Description

Plumeria rust is caused by the obligate fungal pathogen Coleosporium plumeriae, a member of the rust fungi group. As an obligate parasite, it survives and replicates exclusively on living plant tissues, extracting necessary nutrients directly from the host cells to complete its life cycle.

The primary host for this pathogen is the Plumeria plant (also known as Frangipani). The disease is host-specific and targets the foliage, where it thrives by colonizing the leaf tissue, eventually impairing the plant's photosynthetic capabilities and overall biological vigor.

Symptoms are distinct and easily identifiable: they manifest as small, bright yellow or orange pustules concentrated on the underside of the leaves. Correspondingly, yellow spots develop on the upper leaf surfaces, which eventually turn brown and necrotic as the infection progresses, leading to severe leaf drop.

The development and spread of Coleosporium plumeriae are highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures between 20°C and 28°C. Wind-dispersed spores allow the fungus to spread rapidly across plantations or home gardens, especially during the rainy season or in poorly ventilated greenhouses.

Management of the disease requires an integrated approach to maintain plant health. Growers should prioritize cultural practices such as improving air circulation, avoiding overhead watering to keep foliage dry, and promptly removing and disposing of infected leaves to reduce the source of inoculum. If the infection is severe, the application of appropriate fungicides, such as those containing copper or triazoles, is recommended to halt the spread of the pathogen.
