Description
The causative agent of this plant disease is the rust fungus Coleosporium tussilaginis, an obligate parasite that exhibits a complex life cycle. It belongs to the order Pucciniales and is well-known for its need for alternative hosts to complete its developmental stages.
The fungus affects a variety of plant species, most notably Tussilago farfara (colt's foot), Campanula, and Aster species, while using certain pine species as overwintering hosts. This host diversity makes it a persistent issue in both wild and cultivated plant populations.
Diagnostic signs include the presence of bright orange or yellow pustules (uredinia) on the underside of leaves. As the disease progresses, these spots cause chlorosis, premature leaf desiccation, and significant foliage drop, leading to stunted plant growth.
The development of the rust is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high relative humidity and temperatures between 15°C and 22°C. Spores are efficiently disseminated by wind currents, facilitating rapid spread across commercial nurseries and gardens.
The damage caused by Coleosporium tussilaginis involves reduced photosynthetic capacity and overall nutrient depletion, which can be fatal for younger plants. Integrated disease management is essential for successful control:
- Sanitation practices including the removal of infected leaves and debris in autumn.
- Application of appropriate fungicides such as triazoles or copper-based compounds.
- Implementation of proper spacing to improve air circulation and reduce leaf wetness.
- Monitoring susceptible plant groups during high-humidity seasons to ensure early detection.
