Description
Collema cristatum is a species of lichen in the Collemataceae family and does not function as a plant disease in the phytopathological sense. It is a biological crust-forming organism that often colonizes bare, lime-rich soils or rocky surfaces. Farmers often confuse its dark, crusty appearance with soil-borne fungal pathogens due to its distinct, leathery texture when hydrated.
From a biological standpoint, this organism is a symbiotic association between a fungus and Nostoc cyanobacteria. Unlike true plant pathogens that invade vascular tissue or weaken immunity, Collema does not interact negatively with the physiological processes of crops. It is essentially an epiphyte of the soil surface that fixes atmospheric nitrogen, contributing subtly to the soil ecosystem.
The lichen thrives in cool, moist, and high-calcium environments. Its presence is typically a sign of underutilized agricultural land, soil compaction, or areas with persistent moisture stagnation. It does not attack specific crops; rather, it occupies niches where the soil surface remains undisturbed for long periods or where competitive plant growth is absent.
The main visible symptom is the formation of cartilaginous, folded, dark olive-to-black thalli that turn jelly-like and expand upon contact with water. While it causes no direct biological harm to crops, the crust formed by the lichen can sometimes create a physical barrier that complicates the emergence of small-seeded crops and reduces soil surface aeration.
Effective management does not require fungicides or chemical intervention. The most successful approach to controlling unwanted lichen crusts is rooted in standard agronomic practices that disrupt the stability of the soil surface. Regular tillage, improving drainage to resolve waterlogging, and maintaining high crop density to shade the soil surface are sufficient to prevent its proliferation and promote a healthier soil environment.
