The causative agent of a severe form of citrus anthracnose is the fungus Colletotrichum abscissum. This pathogen is a significant threat to citrus production worldwide, particularly affecting the yield and quality of citrus fruits by inducing premature fruit drop and tissue necrosis.
Host plants primarily include various species of the genus Citrus, such as lemons, limes, and oranges. The fungus specifically attacks the reproductive structures, leading to a condition often characterized by the rapid abscission of flowers and young fruitlets.
Symptoms include the appearance of small, dark necrotic spots on petals and leaves. As the infection progresses, affected tissues turn necrotic, and orange-colored conidial masses may become visible on the surface of the lesions, indicating active sporulation of the fungus.
