The causative agent of this disease is a pathogenic fungus belonging to the Colletotrichum genus, known for causing anthracnose-like symptoms in various host plants. This fungus functions as a necrotrophic pathogen, actively invading plant tissues and deriving nutrients from dead or dying cells. Its survival mechanisms, including the formation of resilient survival structures, allow it to overwinter successfully in field debris and soil.
Host crops for this pathogen include a wide range of agricultural and horticultural plants. The fungus primarily targets the aerial parts of the host, including leaves, stems, and fruits. By disrupting the internal vascular systems and destroying tissue integrity, the fungus prevents the plant from maintaining optimal water and nutrient balance, which often leads to significant yield losses if left untreated.
Symptoms typically manifest as necrotic lesions that progress over time. Effective management and disease prevention require a multi-faceted approach to reduce the inoculum pressure and create an unfavorable environment for the pathogen:

- utilizing appropriate fungicidal treatments during high-risk humidity periods.
