Colletotrichum alienum

Colletotrichum alienum

Description

Colletotrichum alienum is a major plant pathogenic fungus belonging to the Colletotrichum gloeosporioides species complex. This pathogen is known as a significant cause of anthracnose, a severe disease that affects a diverse range of crops, causing substantial economic losses in both temperate and tropical agriculture.

The host range of this fungus is extensive, including pome fruits like apples and pears, citrus species, and various fruits such as avocados. The fungus is capable of colonizing leaves, stems, flowers, and fruits, often remaining latent in tissues until favorable conditions trigger the rapid development of visible symptoms during fruit ripening or post-harvest storage.

Diagnostic symptoms include the formation of dark, sunken lesions on fruits and stems, which often expand rapidly under humid conditions. A key diagnostic feature is the emergence of acervuli within these lesions, which produce characteristic salmon-colored or orange spore masses. This causes leaf blight, twig dieback, and significant fruit rot, which renders the produce unmarketable.

The proliferation of the disease is heavily dependent on environmental factors, specifically high humidity and moderate to warm temperatures. Spores are primarily dispersed through water splash, rain, wind, and contaminated pruning tools. The pathogen is highly resilient, capable of surviving through winters or dry seasons within dormant buds, twig cankers, and infected plant debris in the field.

Effective management and prevention of Colletotrichum alienum require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:

  • Rigorous sanitation to remove and destroy infected plant debris and mummified fruit.
  • Pruning strategies that enhance canopy air circulation and sunlight penetration.
  • Preventive application of broad-spectrum fungicides during critical stages of growth.
  • Strict quarantine and inspection procedures for new planting material to prevent introduction.
