Description
The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Colletotrichum annellatum, which belongs to the class of ascomycetes. This pathogen is known to cause anthracnose, a severe fungal disease that affects various tissues of the host plant, leading to significant physiological disruption.
The primary host for this pathogen is the coffee plant (Coffea spp.). The fungus targets leaves, berries, and shoots, which can severely compromise the health and production capacity of coffee plantations in tropical and subtropical regions where the disease is endemic.
Symptoms typically present as dark, sunken, necrotic lesions on leaves and fruit. As the disease progresses, the pathogen produces characteristic conidial masses, often appearing as pinkish or greyish pustules on the surface of the lesions, especially under high humidity conditions.
The development of Colletotrichum annellatum is heavily influenced by environmental factors such as high humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures. The spores are effectively dispersed by rain splash and wind, facilitating rapid spread across the coffee plantation during the rainy season.
The economic damage caused by the disease includes substantial yield losses due to premature fruit drop and leaf blight. Infected berries often have lower quality, while chronic infection weakens the tree, making it more susceptible to other pests and adverse weather conditions.
