The causative agent of this disease is the pathogenic fungus Colletotrichum antirrhinicola. This pathogen is classified as an anthracnose-causing fungus, which belongs to the Ascomycota phylum and is known for its ability to cause severe damage to the foliage and stems of host plants.
The primary host for this pathogen is the snapdragon, botanically known as Antirrhinum majus. The fungus is highly host-specific and primarily attacks the snapdragon, invading the plant tissue and causing significant physiological stress, which often results in premature plant decline.
Symptoms typically include the appearance of small, round, light-colored spots with distinct dark brown or reddish margins on the leaves and stems. As the infection progresses, these spots develop small black structures known as acervuli, which serve as the primary source of fungal spores that can spread the disease to healthy plants.
