Colletotrichum aotearoa is a pathogenic fungus belonging to the Colletotrichum gloeosporioides complex. It is a well-known causative agent of anthracnose, a severe disease that affects various agricultural crops, fruits, and ornamental plants globally, particularly in warmer, humid climates.
This fungus exhibits a wide host range, frequently infecting tropical fruits such as avocado, citrus, and various types of palms. It targets both juvenile tissues and mature fruits. Infection often remains latent during the early development of the fruit, manifesting symptoms only as the produce nears harvest or during storage, which creates significant challenges for supply chains.
The characteristic symptoms include small, circular, sunken lesions on leaves, stems, and fruits. As the pathogen develops, these spots expand and coalesce. Under conditions of high humidity, the lesions produce distinctive gelatinous masses of conidia, which are usually salmon-pink or orange. In advanced stages, the host tissue collapses, leading to significant fruit rot and leaf drop.
