Description

The disease is caused by the fungus Colletotrichum arecicola, a pathogen belonging to the Colletotrichum genus. It is a highly specialized fungus that primarily attacks palm trees, causing a condition widely known as anthracnose. The infection can be persistent, often remaining in the plant tissues and emerging when environmental conditions become optimal.

The host range of Colletotrichum arecicola is strictly limited to members of the Arecaceae family. This includes a variety of ornamental palm species frequently grown in nurseries, greenhouses, and interior settings, as well as several palm varieties cultivated in tropical regions. The fungus can infect leaves, petioles, and occasionally stems.

The characteristic symptoms begin as small, irregular necrotic spots on the leaf blades. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, often merging to create large, unsightly dead patches with dark, defined margins. In humid environments, small, spore-bearing structures called acervuli appear on the lesions, often releasing a mass of pinkish or grey conidia.

Development and spread of the pathogen are driven by environmental factors, particularly high humidity and temperatures ranging from moderate to warm. Spores are primarily disseminated through splashing water, such as rain or overhead irrigation, as well as physical contact via contaminated tools or insect vectors. Poor airflow in crowded planting areas significantly exacerbates the spread.

The severity of the disease is significant, as it leads to widespread necrosis of foliage, resulting in reduced photosynthetic capacity and overall plant decline. In severe cases, the plant may experience severe defoliation, stunted growth, and eventually death if the infection compromises the apical meristem or becomes systemic.

Control strategies emphasize cultural practices, such as the removal and destruction of infected plant debris to reduce the inoculum level in the environment. It is crucial to maintain proper plant spacing for ventilation and to avoid overhead watering. Chemical management with protective and systemic fungicides is recommended to curb outbreaks and protect healthy tissue.
