The fungus Colletotrichum australe is a recognized phytopathogen responsible for causing anthracnose in various botanical species. As an ascomycete fungus, it employs an effective survival strategy by colonizing host tissues and producing vast quantities of asexual spores known as conidia. These spores act as the primary inoculants for the seasonal spread of the disease.
The host range of Colletotrichum australe encompasses a variety of crops, primarily focusing on plants in tropical and subtropical climates, but also extending to temperate region plants under specific conditions. The pathogen primarily attacks the parenchyma of leaves, stems, and fruits. By secreting enzymes that degrade plant cell walls, the fungus extracts nutrients necessary for its vegetative growth and reproduction.
Symptoms of the disease are easily identifiable in the field. They usually manifest as necrotic lesions, which are often sunken and exhibit a dark, water-soaked appearance. In high humidity, the centers of these lesions may display orange or pinkish spore masses. Without timely intervention, these spots expand and coalesce, leading to severe defoliation, stem girdling, and fruit rotting, which drastically diminishes both yield quantity and post-harvest shelf life.
The epidemiology of Colletotrichum australe is heavily dependent on moisture and temperature. Spore germination and colonization occur optimally at temperatures between 22°C and 28°C when free moisture is present on the plant surface. Rainfall, heavy dew, and irrigation systems that keep foliage wet for extended periods are the main drivers for rapid disease dissemination across a field or orchard.
Management of this disease requires an integrated strategy to minimize reliance on intensive chemical applications. Key preventive measures include:
- Strict sanitation by removing and destroying crop debris.
- Using certified, disease-free seed and nursery stock.
- Implementing wide row spacing to improve air circulation.
