Colletotrichum beeveri is a microscopic fungal pathogen belonging to the genus Colletotrichum, primarily responsible for severe anthracnose outbreaks in various botanical hosts. This pathogen acts as a necrotrophic parasite, invading healthy plant tissues and extracting nutrients, which eventually leads to tissue death and structural failure of the host plant.

The fungus has a broad host range, impacting various agricultural, horticultural, and ornamental crops, including specific fruit-bearing plants and vegetables. It is capable of infecting all stages of plant development, from seedlings to mature plants, often causing substantial economic losses in commercial greenhouse and field production environments.

The characteristic symptoms of infection include the development of sunken, dark-colored lesions on leaves, stems, flowers, and fruit. These lesions typically exhibit a concentric growth pattern and eventually produce masses of conidia, often appearing as slimy, orange, or grey spore-bearing structures known as acervuli. Severe infections lead to leaf blight and fruit rot.

The spread and development of the disease are highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly moisture and temperature. High relative humidity (exceeding 85%) and moderate temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C create ideal conditions for spore germination and colonization. Rain splash and wind are the primary vectors for moving spores throughout a crop field.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Critical measures include:

  • Utilizing pathogen-free certified seeds and nursery stock.
  • Maintaining proper spacing to improve air circulation within the canopy.
  • Sanitation by removing and destroying all infected plant residues.
  • Application of appropriate fungicides during the early stages of disease pressure.
These practices minimize the risk of secondary infections and preserve the overall productivity of the crop system.
