Description
Anthracnose of brassicas is a widespread fungal disease caused by the pathogen Colletotrichum brassicicola. This fungus affects a wide range of crops belonging to the Brassicaceae family, including cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and oilseed rape. The pathogen is known for its ability to persist in crop debris and soil, making it a persistent challenge for farmers and agronomists.
The primary symptoms manifest as small, circular, or irregular lesions on leaves, stems, and seed pods. These spots are often light-colored in the center with a dark margin. As the infection progresses, the spots may coalesce, leading to tissue necrosis. Under high humidity, the characteristic black fruiting bodies, known as acervuli, develop within the lesions, releasing masses of spores that facilitate rapid secondary spread.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development of Colletotrichum brassicicola. High relative humidity (above 85%) and moderate temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C provide the perfect environment for spore germination and infection. Dense canopies and stagnant air conditions further exacerbate the spread of the disease, allowing the fungus to infect plants rapidly.
The economic impact of this disease is significant, as it leads to defoliation, reduced photosynthesis, and weakened plants. Severe infestations result in stunted growth, deformed pods, and low-quality seeds. Furthermore, the disease can negatively affect the post-harvest quality of crops, leading to decay during storage and significant market value loss for the producers.
Management of this disease requires an integrated approach to minimize the inoculum load and protect the crop:
- Implementing a proper crop rotation by avoiding brassica crops for at least 3-4 years.
- Removing and destroying infected plant debris after harvest to reduce overwintering sites.
- Using pathogen-free, certified, and treated seeds.
- Controlling weeds that serve as alternative hosts for the pathogen.
- Applying preventive fungicide treatments, such as copper-based products or systemic triazoles, during periods of high humidity and risk.
