Colletotrichum brevisporum is a pathogenic fungus responsible for causing anthracnose in various plant species. As a member of the Glomerellaceae family, it thrives as an opportunistic parasite, primarily targeting crops in warmer, humid environments, which results in severe tissue necrosis.

The fungus affects a broad range of hosts, including tropical fruits such as papaya, as well as various ornamental shrubs and legumes. The pathogen is highly destructive because it can infect all aerial parts of the plant, including leaves, stems, flowers, and fruits, often compromising the entire plant's health and structural integrity.

Symptoms typically manifest as necrotic, sunken lesions that are dark brown or black in color. As the disease progresses, these lesions may merge, and in high-humidity conditions, they produce masses of spores often appearing as pinkish or orange gelatinous drops. Fruit infection leads to rapid softening and post-harvest decay.

The development of Colletotrichum brevisporum is heavily dependent on moisture and moderate to high temperatures. Rain splashes, overhead irrigation, and contaminated tools are the primary vehicles for spore dispersal. The fungus can overwinter in plant debris or survive as latent infections in dormant tissues until conditions favor its activation.

Effective management strategies include:

  • Removal and destruction of infected plant material to reduce inoculum.
  • Implementation of crop rotation to break the disease cycle.
  • Use of resistant varieties and pathogen-free planting stock.
  • Application of fungicides, such as strobilurins or triazoles, when environmental conditions are favorable for disease.
  • Maintaining good sanitation practices and improving canopy ventilation to lower humidity levels around the plants.
