Description
Cacao anthracnose is a destructive fungal disease caused by the pathogen Colletotrichum cacao. As a member of the Colletotrichum genus, this fungus is known for its ability to cause extensive damage to various tropical crops, specifically targeting cacao trees and severely impacting the yield and quality of cocoa production worldwide.
The primary host for this fungus is the cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao). The pathogen attacks various parts of the tree, including tender leaves, young stems, and the developing pods. In severe cases, the infection can lead to extensive defoliation and dieback, which reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the tree and its overall productivity.
The symptoms of the disease are characterized by dark, sunken lesions that appear on the infected tissues. As the disease progresses, these lesions may develop small, pinkish or tan-colored masses of fungal spores. On the pods, the lesions can cause significant tissue necrosis, eventually leading to rot and rendering the beans inside unsuitable for processing.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Colletotrichum cacao. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and warm temperatures are essential for spore germination and infection. Rain splash and high winds are the primary vectors for local dispersal, moving spores from infected canopy tissues to healthy ones or to neighboring trees.
To effectively manage cacao anthracnose, a multifaceted approach is required. This involves:
- Sanitation, which includes removing and destroying infected plant material to reduce the inoculum.
- Cultural practices that promote tree spacing and canopy aeration to lower humidity.
- Regular monitoring during the rainy season.
- Application of appropriate fungicides, particularly copper-based formulations, to protect young shoots and developing pods from infection.
